Rev. Dr. Joseph H. “Joe” Eby was welcomed as Interim Pastor of Third Presbyterian Church on October 18, 2015. Joe and his wife Susan have lived in Springfield for 35 years. Prior to entering the ministry, Joe worked for the State of Illinois for ten years, with the Dept. of Central Management Services and the Dept. of Revenue. Susan retired from the State in 2002.
Joe graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Communications. He received a Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. During this time, Joe served as Seminary Intern/Pastoral Assistant here at Third Presbyterian. He also received a Doctor of Ministry from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. He was ordained as a Minister of the Word & Sacrament (now Teaching Elder) in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1993. During his more than twenty years of ministry, Joe has also served Presbyterian churches in Springfield and Chatham.
Prior to his return to Third Presbyterian, Joe worked with Grow Springfield, a local nonprofit organization formed to support, resource, and promote community gardens and urban agriculture. He also was trained and worked as a Caribou Coffee barista. Joe is active in Tyrian Lodge #333 A.F. & A.M. in Springfield. He and Susan participate in the Faith Coalition for the Common Good and the Slow Food Springfield, IL chapter. They have two adult children, four grandchildren, and a dog named Gracie.
